Biogen, a biotech company, discovers, develops, and delivers innovative therapies worldwide for people living with serious neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. The global organization, headquartered in Cambridge, MA is also home to its research operations.

The renovation of Building 6, Floor 6, a mixed lab and office space accommodates multiple groups within Biogen’s Research & Development Organization. The floor was converted to support biologics laboratories, with a shared lab services space and open office, including collaboration and huddle spaces, copy centers, mail rooms, and approximately 10,000 square feet of lab area. The wet lab space consists of open lab, lab support, tissue culture, and cold storage. TRIA designed the space to maintain a strong visual connection between lab and office, both in design and transparency, allowing the staff to remain connected regardless of the day’s requirements.

Originally spread out over multiple sites in Lexington, TRIA worked to consolidate the company to 4 floors at 125 Binney Street, Cambridge, located in the biotech capital of the world. TRIA worked in phases to plan and construct the 175,000 SF state of the art lab and office space, including executive offices, a medium sized vivarium, and a conference center large enough to host the entire company campus. The consolidation and integration of the space continued by pursuing transparency between lab and office, allowing employees to move seamlessly between all elements of their job.

TRIA designed a state-of-the-art lab facility center for Genetics Guided Dementia Discovery (G2D2) for the U.S. pharmaceutical subsidiary of Tokyo-based Eisai Co., Ltd. The space features an open office plan and adjacent open laboratory for Eisai’s neuroscience R&D team of 100+ employees. Centered around a central collaboration space dubbed “The Brain”, the open labs are designed to allow multi-disciplinary scientists to work together in a single, accessible and shared lab space. Collaboration continues in neighborhoods created throughout the office, all of which offer bench seating, sit-to-stand desks, and personal lockers.

At its founding, Oncorus took a 12,300 SF space for its headquarters in Cambridge, MA.

Our design team took a holistic approach to the office and lab design of Oncorus’ headquarters to create an efficient and flexible workspace that supports the company’s scientific research mission. Work stations along the window line allow natural light to penetrate deep into the space, and conference rooms on the interior feature glass walls to provide transparency. A conference room offers a wall-sized window to the lab, providing a view to the exciting discoveries taking place.

The design developed was one of vibrancy and heavy branding – a place where this biotech startup could put down roots.

This 9,000 SF office and lab renovation project began as a test-fit before proceeding on to design services. The existing lab and office layout of the space needed to be updated to meet a more contemporary style. Finishes were chosen to freshen up the space and emphasize the company’s branding. The client had specific project needs that the team successfully met, and the project was delivered on time and within budget.
